Spring Is Here - Now What?
We have you covered with a quick rundown for your spring gardening needs!
Spring is the perfect time to create a beautiful garden. Whether you’re a novice just getting started or an experienced gardener looking for new ideas, here are ten tips to help you get the most out of your New England garden this spring:

Get Started Early - Don’t wait until the last minute to start prepping your garden! Start early so that you can have plenty of time to plan and plant in order to enjoy a lush, colorful garden come summertime.
Know Your Climate - Different plants thrive in different climates, so it’s important to know which ones will do best in your particular region. Research what kinds of flowers and vegetables are suited for New England gardens and plan accordingly.
Pull those weeds. Whether you’re seeing left-over weeds from last year or new ones that sprouted in cool weather, eliminate them now when the ground’s still soft from winter. They’ll come out easier than in hard, dry summer soil. Especially remove them before they have a chance to grow and deeply root, and especially pull them before they have a chance to go to seed.
Choose Plants Carefully - While it may be tempting to buy the most eye-catching flowers at the nursery, make sure they are appropriate for your garden’s climate and conditions. Read labels carefully or ask a knowledgeable staff member for advice before you make any purchases.
Divide perennials. Right before new growth begins is an ideal time to dig and divide most perennial flowers that are growing beyond where you'd like them. Replant divided clumps ASAP, and water them well in their new home. Or give away pieces or compost any excess. The exception is early-season perennials that already are blooming – or that are in bud and ready to bloom soon. These are best divided after bloom or in early fall.
Prioritize What You Plant - Consider what kind of garden you want to create before you start planting. Perhaps you want to focus on vegetables, herbs, or flowers? Or maybe a combination of all three? Figure out what your primary goals are so that you can choose plants that will help you achieve them.
Keep Your Garden Well Watered - Adequate watering is key in any successful garden. Pay attention to the soil and water accordingly based on the instructions for each specific plant variety.
Mulch - Adding a layer of mulch can help your plants retain moisture, suppress weeds, and add nutrients to the soil. Be sure to find the right type of mulch for your garden’s needs, however – some varieties may not be suitable for certain climates and plants.
Use Fertilizer - To give your plants an extra boost, consider using fertilizer in moderation during the spring months. Doing so will provide essential nutrients that are needed for healthy growth throughout the season.
Don’t Forget The Sun! - Most plants require plenty of sunlight in order to thrive, and some may need a specific amount each day. Make sure your garden gets enough sun for the type of plants you’ve chosen to grow.
Control Pests - Insects, weeds, and other pests can wreak havoc on a garden if left untreated. Early spring is the perfect time to take measures such as adding beneficial insects or using organic pest control products in order to keep them under control throughout the season.
Give Yourself Time - Finally, remember that gardens take time! Relax and enjoy the process – it will be well worth it when you get to reap the rewards of your hard work come summertime!
